Before anyone starts hootin' and hollerin' about how old these texts are, please remember - if you can't grasp, or better yet execute, the processes from the turn of the century, you can't work accurately today. I've worked in the early Ford/hot rod business, and can vouch for tenths tolerances being the norm. This was in volume production, circa 1930. The toolroom work must have been incredible in its accuracy.

Just want to say that there has been a major step change in machine shop practice & toolmaking in the last twenty five years or so. I came into engineering when punches & dies where made with die filers & punch shapers, these are completely museum pieces now. After that it was optical ginders & diaformed wheels, split dies, etc & now these have almost completely disappeared. Wire eroding, punch type EDM & CNC milling have transformed tool & die work.
