Author: Matthew FoxEditor: Namaste Pub IncorporatedISBN: 738Size: 18,54 MBFormat: PDF, ePubRead: 157In May, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI formally declared 12th century Benedictine nun Hildegard of Bingen a canonized saint, with the canonization ceremony scheduled for October. He regards her as one of the great thinker who has helped shape the thought of the Catholic Church. Today there are many websites and Hildegard groups that celebrate and honor Hildegard's teachings, philosophy, art, and music. Author Matthew Fox writes in Hildegard of Bingen about this amazing woman and what we can learn from her. In an era when women were marginalized, Hildegard was an outspoken, controversial figure.
Yet so visionary was her insight that she was sought out by kings, popes, abbots, and bishops for advice. A sixteenth century follower of Martin Luther called her “the first Protestant” because of her appeals to reform the church. As a writer, composer, philosopher, Christian mystic, Benedictine abbess, healer, artist, feminist, and student of science, Hildegard was a pioneer in many fields in her day. For many centuries after her death Hildegard was ignored or even ridiculed but today is finally being recognized for her immense contribution to so many areas, including our understanding of our spiritual relationship to the earth—a contribution that touches on key issues faced by our planet in the 21st century, particularly with regard to the environment and ecology.

Her works include twenty-seven symphonic compositions; Scivias, a compilation of her visions; and her two major medical works, Causae et Curae, a medical compendium, and Physica, published here in English in its entirety for the first time. Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179) was an extraordinary woman living in the Rhineland valley during most of the twelfth century. Besides being the abbess of a large and influential Benedictine abbey, she was a prominent preacher, healer, scientist, and artist. She also was a composer and theologian, writing nine books on theology, medicine, science, and physiology, as well as 70 poems and an opera.
At the age of 42, she began to have visions; these were captured as 36 illuminations-24 of which are recorded in this book along with her commentaries on them. She also wrote a text describing these visions entitled Scivias (Know the Ways), now published as Hildegard of Bingen's Mystical Visions. Author Matthew Fox has stated, 'If Hildegard had been a man, she would be well known as one of the greatest artists and intellectuals the world has ever seen.' It is a credit to the power of the women's movement and our times that this towering genius of Western thought is being rediscovered in her full grandeur and autonomy. Virtually unknown for more than 800 years in Western history, Hildegard was featured as one of the women in Judy Chicago's Dinner Party in the early 1980s and published for the first time in English by Bear & Company in 1982. In addition to her mystical teachings, Hildegard's music has been performed and recorded for a new and growing audience.

To emerge as one of the significant voices of the 12th century. Unforgettable.” —January Magazine One of the most extraordinary women of the Middle Ages, Hildegard von Bingen—Benedictine abbess, healer, composer, saint—experienced mystic visions from a very young age. Offered by her noble family to the Church at the age of eight, she lived for years in forced silence.
But through the study of books and herbs, through music and the kinship of her sisters, Hildegard found her way from a life of submission to a calling that celebrated the divine glories all around us. In this brilliantly researched and insightful novel, Mary Sharratt offers a deeply moving portrait of a woman willing to risk everything for what she believed, a triumphant exploration of the life she might well have lived. Author: Vikk SimmonsEditor: Holy Hour BooksISBN: 887Size: 12,81 MBFormat: PDF, ePub, MobiRead: 646Saint Hildegard is a woman and a saint of many talents. A Benedictine abbess of a monastery in Germany, she was not only known as a Christian mystic and a visionary, but also as a philosopher, a composer, and a writer. Canonized in May, 2012, she was also named a Doctor of the Church by Pope Benedict XVI. She is the fourth woman Doctor of the Church standing with St.
Theresa of Avila, St Catherine of Siena, and St. Therese of Lisieux (the Little Flower). A remarkable woman, St. Hildegard offered spiritual advice to many, and turned to others for advice such as St. Bernard of Clairvaux.
The harmony of God's creation appeared fully in her visions and spoke to the dignity of both men and women. While full of humility she was not lacking in boldness and bravely confronted the controversies and heresies of her day. She is even more, perhaps, a woman of today's time than her own with her emphasis on ecology, medicine, natural science, gardening, and 'the complementary relationship of men and women.'
She is indeed, as Pope Benedict said, a worthy role model for Catholics today. Her liturgical feast day is September 17.
